Bouyon artists: the pioneers and the new wave

From the band that invented the genre in 1988 to the producers making today's riddims, here are the names that matter in bouyon music.

The pioneers of Dominica

WCK (Windward Caribbean Kulture)

The band that created bouyon. Formed in 1988 in Roseau, Dominica, WCK fused cadence-lypso and jing ping with electronic keyboards to invent an entire genre.

Roots, Stems and Branches (RSB)

One of the original groups of Dominican bouyon, a player in the first wave that established the genre as the sound of Dominica's carnival.

First Serenade

Another founding name of bouyon, counted among the groups that defined the original sound at the end of the 1980s.

The figures of modern bouyon

Asa Bantan

Artist from Grand Bay, Dominica, nicknamed the Bouyon Boss and King of Bouyon. A central figure of Dominican carnival and of today's bouyon scene.

Reo

Dominican artist nicknamed the Prince of Bouyon, nominated at the Caribbean Music Awards 2026. He represents the new generation pushing bouyon toward the French Antilles, as on Joli BB with Martinican singer Maurane Voyer.

Smokiller

Bouyon artist and producer, the engine behind the Bouyon Shattaz bouyon remixes, flipping Afro, pop and rap songs into bouyon versions, like Throw Dat (Bouyon 2026) for Klass Money.

The producers behind the sound

Modern bouyon is also made in the studio, by producers that Bouyon Shattaz follows daily: HYPNO (@hypnoticbeatz), Savion (@prod.bysavion), Denmath (producer from Saint-Martin based between Nantes and Paris, behind the riddims Tropical Riddim and Harley Riddim), and MB On The Track. Their riddims feed the bouyon dance and the playlists of the moment.

To hear these artists in a real setting, head to the bouyon playlist: the Bouyon Road Mix brings together the new releases and the classics followed by Bouyon Shattaz.
