Bouyon in Martinique: jump up in the land of zouk
Martinique, land of zouk, is also a land of bouyon. Martinican audiences know the genre under the name jump up and live it at carnival as well as at parties all year round.
A shared Creole history
Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique share the Kwéyòl language and closely related carnival traditions: chanté mas, street bands, Creole dances. Bouyon has circulated among the three islands since the 1990s, carried by exchanges between musicians and audiences.
Artists who build the bridge
Collaborations like Joli BB by Reo, a Dominican artist, with Maurane Voyer, a Martinican singer, show the bouyon of 2026 at work: a Dominican creation, a Martinican bridge, an audience on both sides of the sea. See the Maurane Voyer page.
