Reketeng: the pleasure branch of bouyon

Reketeng is one of the forms derived from bouyon in Dominica, alongside bouyon soca and bouyon-muffin. Less known outside the Caribbean than classic bouyon, it belongs to the same creative explosion that followed the creation of the genre by WCK in 1988.

In the bouyon fusion family

After 1988, bouyon does not stay frozen: Dominican musicians test fusions in every direction. Some will produce bouyon soca, others bouyon-muffin, others still reketeng. Each branch keeps the foundation of the genre: traditional Dominican rhythms, keyboards and carnival energy.

Why these branches matter

Branches like reketeng show that bouyon is an ecosystem, not a single sound. It is this diversity, born in Dominica, that allows the genre today to live in Guadeloupe, in Martinique, in France and across the whole diaspora.
