Dominica Carnival: the kingdom of bouyon
Dominica’s carnival, celebrated in Roseau before Lent, is considered one of the most traditional in the Caribbean. And its soundtrack has a name: bouyon, created on this same island in 1988.
Mas Domnik, a carnival that stayed Creole
Where other carnivals have become tourist products, Mas Domnik keeps its old forms: chanté mas, lapo kabwit bands, traditional characters and the sensays. Bouyon found its natural ground there, because it is itself made from these traditions.
The season of bouyon tracks
Every year, carnival season launches the competition of bouyon tracks: the bands and producers release their new material, the public picks its favorites, and the winners become the classics of the year. Following Dominica’s carnival means following the beating heart of bouyon.
