WCK: the inventors of bouyon

Windward Caribbean Kulture, WCK, is the most important group in the history of bouyon: it is the band that created the genre in 1988, in Roseau, in Dominica, by fusing cadence-lypso and jing ping with electronic keyboards.

An experiment that became a genre

At the end of the 1980s, zouk dominates the Caribbean and Dominican musicians want a modern sound that resembles them. WCK experiments: the traditional rhythms of lapo kabwit and jing ping, the guitar of cadence, and on top, keyboards and drum machines. The mix takes the name of a Creole soup: bouyon. A new genre is born.

The legacy of WCK

Everything this site tells descends from WCK: bouyon soca, bouyon gwada, shatta bouyon, the careers of Asa Bantan or Reo. Knowing WCK means knowing the starting point of world bouyon music. For the full context, read the history of bouyon.
