New Bouyon: one name, three stories

Published October 20, 2026

New Bouyon is the most quoted term for today's bouyon, and the easiest to confuse. It covers three distinct uses, carried by different artists at different dates. This page separates them cleanly, with their dates, because in bouyon, credit turns on who did what, and when.

First use: New Bouyon Age, TiiTii NBA's EP (2023)

The first dated use of the term belongs to the Guadeloupe scene: on March 22, 2023, TiiTii NBA released the 'New Bouyon Age' EP on GVE Music. NBA there means New Bouyon Age, the new era of bouyon. The EP, written in part by Terry Capitolin, gathers tracks like 'Bréné Sa', 'Makaveli', 'Kitty Kitty' and 'Poom Poom' with DJ Softee, in fast bouyon measured around 160 BPM.

The same circle also used 'New Bouyon Wave' in 2023, in a TiiTii NBA album and in a D0 Production single bringing together TiiTii NBA, Nils, DJ Softee, Aknose and Theomaa. No source presents New Bouyon Age as a genre manifesto: it is a record title and a scene signature, one year before the next use.

Second use: Ricky Bishop's New Bouyon concept (2024)

In 2024, Ricky Bishop, rapper and sound engineer of Guadeloupean and Malagasy origin based in Bordeaux, launched what his Deezer biography calls New Bouyon: a modern reinvention of traditional bouyon incorporating electro and trap elements. That year he released two EPs, '#newbouyon' and '#sexybouyon', with tracks like 'Anlè Mwen', which Deezer calls a minor hit, then the album '#newbouyonexperience' in 2025.

French press relayed his formula: the magazine Modzik presented him in December 2024 in the 'New Wave du bouyon', alongside Théodora and EzekTheArtist, and quoted his approach, which he names 'audiocrack', a sound he defines as addictive and immersive, with Franglais over bouyon percussion. An honesty note: Bishop presents himself as the concept's introducer, and sources repeat his own claim; no independent outlet crowns him creator of a genre, and TiiTii NBA's use predates his by a year.

Third use: the generic label for the 2020s

The third use is descriptive: in mixes, playlists and encyclopedias, New Bouyon increasingly names contemporary bouyon in general, the 2020s productions blending hip hop, trap, contemporary R&B and dancehall. Smokiller uses it that way in his Bouyon Shattaz mixes, for example in his 'Best New Bouyon Songs' selections.

In that broad use, the term meets RnBouyon: two young labels, born in the 2020s, for productions sharing one technical DNA. This site uses New Bouyon in the generic sense only when context is clear, and always attributes the signed uses to their authors and dates.

The common root: reketeng techniques

Why do these new labels sound familiar to Dominican ears? Because their techniques are not new in Dominica. Sampled melodies, programmed percussion, electronic basslines, vocals influenced by rap and dancehall: that is the grammar of reketeng, practised in Roseau since the late 1990s. Wikipedia puts it in both languages: reketeng opened the way to what is often called New Bouyon today.

Bouyon Shattaz's position is therefore double, and owned: New Bouyon is a useful term for today's bouyon, and its technical roots are Dominican and old. Documenting both, the French and Antillean artists' brands and the method born in Dominica, is exactly this site's work.
