Problem Child: the Saint Vincent road champion who sang with Ridge

Published October 20, 2026

Problem Child is a soca singer and songwriter from Saint Vincent, also known by the nickname Vincy Bad Boy. His name appears on this site for one precise reason: in January 2025 he released “FYM” with Mr Ridge, one of the most active bouyon singers from Dominica, and the record was named a finalist for Collaboration of the Year at the Dominica Music Awards 2025. This profile first answers the question every reader asks: is the Problem Child of “FYM” the famous Saint Vincent soca artist, or a bouyon namesake? The sources consulted answer clearly, and this profile shows how, before telling the path that led him from the Vincy Road March to the bouyon mixes.

The two Problem Child question: one artist, and here is the evidence

Start with the doubt, because it is a fair one. Bouyon has its own artists, often young, often known first through DJ mixes and platform listings, and a name as generic as Problem Child could belong to two different singers. When “FYM” came out on 30 January 2025 under the names Ridge and Problem Child, the title alone did not say which Problem Child it was. This profile therefore checked the record the way you check a credit: through the sources around the record, not through habit.

First piece of evidence: the mix listings. The Vincy Heat 2025 mix, devoted to the Saint Vincent scene, places “FYM”, credited to Problem Child and Mr Ridge, in the same run as “Fraid Horn”, “Pong Pong” and “Happy Carnival”, the Vincy Mas 2025 records of the Vincentian singer. The Soca Passport and Bouyon Passport 2026 mixes, which blend soca and bouyon from across the Caribbean, do the same: “FYM” appears there among the Vincentian Problem Child records, never in a separate Dominican block. None of those mixes knows a second Problem Child.

Second piece of evidence: the writing credits. The recent records of the Saint Vincent artist, such as “Carnival Jumbie”, “Like Never Before” and “B.O.T.S.”, credit a writer named Shertz James, whom the press presents as the real name of Problem Child. No source consulted publishes a different writer, a different path or a different island for the Problem Child of “FYM”. Third piece of evidence: the context. A background article on bouyon published by station Z89 names Problem Child among the soca giants who took note of bouyon and brought it into their own world. A Vincentian soca singer recording with a Dominican bouyon singer is therefore no anomaly: it is exactly the kind of exchange the scene has lived on for years.

Fourth piece of evidence, which explains the record place at Dominican awards: “FYM” is a collaboration between islands. The partner, Mr Ridge, is Dominican, a major figure in current bouyon, and that link is what places the record among the finalists for Collaboration of the Year at the Dominica Music Awards 2025, according to the list published by Black Island Girl Multimedia. The conclusion of this profile, stated plainly: the Problem Child of “FYM” is the soca artist from Saint Vincent. No source supports the existence of a distinct bouyon namesake, and this profile does not invent one.

Saint Vincent, Brooklyn, and a nickname: Vincy Bad Boy

The published biographies of Problem Child tell of a childhood shared between two places in the broad sense: Saint Vincent, where he was born, and Brooklyn in New York, where he was raised. The artist page of radio NTS and the profile on the Buzz.tt site tell the same path: born in Saint Vincent, moved young to Brooklyn, he absorbed hip hop and dancehall cultures there while keeping Vincy culture and his love of soca at the centre of his music. Both sources present him as a global soca ambassador who represents Vincentians.

On his name, the published sources do not tell exactly the same story, and this profile prints both forms with their sources rather than quietly choosing one. The older biographies, on NTS and Buzz.tt, publish the birth name Johnny Fontainne, with the nickname Vincy Bad Boy. Recent press tells it differently: Ebuzztt, in its article on his 2025 championship, writes that his real name is Shertz James, and the writing credits of his recent records, on Shazam and on Qobuz alike, list Shertz James as the writer of his songs. An article from 2024 on his record “Identity” even presents both in one sentence: Shertz James, better known as Problem Child, born Johnny Fontainne in Saint Vincent.

This profile therefore keeps the most honest wording: the artist performs and releases as Problem Child, his recent writing credits carry the name Shertz James, his older biographies publish the name Johnny Fontainne, and his documented stage nickname is Vincy Bad Boy. What the sources do agree on is the trade: a singer, but also a songwriter, and that second trade explains the staying power of the first.

Because Problem Child was never only a voice. The Vincentian newspaper Searchlight, in a 2020 article on songwriting as big business, counted him among the most prolific Vincentian songwriters of the recent period, and stated that he had written for Patrice Roberts, Shal Marshall, Blaxx and Machel Montano. Ebuzztt tells its side of the same story: Patrice Roberts gave him a decisive opportunity, with their joint record “A Little Wine”, and he then wrote many anthems for her and for others. Writing for other people, season after season, is the invisible part of this career, and the part that makes him hard to replace.

Party Animal, Mad House, Never Bow: king of the Vincy Mas road

The Vincy Road March is the title that matters most in the carnival of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: it rewards the song played most on the road during the parade. Problem Child first won it in 2007 with “Party Animal”, the record which, according to Buzz.tt, can turn even the most jaded reveller into a party animal. He won it a second time in 2009 with “Mad House”. Those two wins, reported by NTS as well as Buzz.tt, earned him a spotlight on NBC Radio and on the HOT 97.1 website.

What followed proves it was no early flash. In 2017, according to Ebuzztt, his record “Never Bow” sealed a new Saint Vincent Road March championship, applauded by colleagues such as Lyrikal and Patrice Roberts. Between those dates, the catalogue grew in every direction of soca: “Real Badboy”, set on the Ninety Riddim and described by Buzz.tt as a reggae departure from his usual style, “High Whole Night” with the dancehall group Voicemail, “Stick On”, released in late spring 2011 on OBanga Productions, and “Ah Tink Ah Drunk” with Tallpree, on the Mad Blood Riddim. Buzz.tt also lists his collaborations with Beenie Man on “Party Party”, with Bunji Garlin, and with Fay-Ann Lyons on “We Ready”.

The recent peak is documented by Vincypowa News from the official results of the Carnival Development Corporation. “Carnival Jumbie” won the Road March in 2024. In 2025, in a rare feat, Problem Child took first and second place in the same year: “Fraid Horn” first with a perfect score of 100 points, “Pong Pong” second with 97 points. Ebuzztt, which interviewed him after that double win, reports his own reading of it: he said he had seen comments that Problem Child was competing with himself at Vincy Mas, and answered that his theory of life is to do better than yesterday, in music as in everything else.

In 2026, again according to the official results reported by Vincypowa News, he won a third straight Road March with “Party Time”, first with 53 points, without even entering the Soca Monarch contest that year: the road crown came only from the trucks, the DJs and the feet of the crowd, to borrow the newspaper phrasing. Three straight road titles, after those of 2007, 2009 and 2017, make him one of the dominant figures in the modern history of Vincy Mas. It is that artist, with that record, who took the microphone next to Ridge.

FYM: the meeting with Ridge and the bouyon of Dominica

“FYM” was released on 30 January 2025, credited to Ridge and Problem Child, distributed through TuneCore according to the credit on the auto generated YouTube video, with the line ℗ 2025 Ridge and Problem Child. Shazam publishes its full lyrics. The record is a carnival party record, built on a chorus repeated like a slogan: the woman is warned that what happens in the party stays in the party, and the two voices trade verses on that ground, Ridge called by name in the text, Problem Child named in the verse that says, in substance, that men like Problem Child and Ridge will take the girl home after the party. The tone is raw and direct, in the vein of the roughest bouyon records of the period, the ones the new Dominican generation delivers without softening.

For Ridge, the record sits inside a run of collaborations that made him a bridge between Dominica and the rest of the Caribbean. For Problem Child, it marks a documented step into bouyon: not a conversion, since his discography remains soca, but an incursion into the neighbouring genre, at the precise moment when Dominican bouyon is becoming the party language of a growing part of the English speaking Caribbean and the French Antilles. The recognition followed: the official finalists list of the Dominica Music Awards 2025, published by Black Island Girl Multimedia, holds “Mr Ridge and Problem Child, FYM” among the finalists for Collaboration of the Year, alongside, among others, “Someone Else” by Quan, Litle Boy and Trilla G, whom this site also profiles.

It is worth measuring what that nomination says about bouyon today. A Dominican award honours a collaboration in which one of the two artists is the road champion of Saint Vincent: the genre born in Roseau has become a place where soca artists from neighbouring islands come to record, and not only to listen. The mixes confirm it season after season: “FYM” turns in soca and bouyon mixes of 2025 and 2026, in DJ podcasts that programme the Vincy Mas records and the new releases from Dominica, Saint Lucia and the Virgin Islands in the same breath.

This profile knows of no other bouyon record published under his name to date, and it says so: “FYM” is, on the current sources, his documented bouyon record, surrounded by an immense soca discography. That contrast is precisely what makes the record interesting for a Dominican site: it shows the present gravity of bouyon, able to draw a Vincentian road champion into a studio of the Roseau scene. The writer behind the singer: writing for Patrice Roberts, Machel Montano and others

One of the reasons Problem Child lasts, where so many carnival singers fade after two seasons, lies in his second trade. Published sources describe him as a songwriter in demand: Searchlight placed him in 2020 among the most prolific Vincentian writers, with writing for Patrice Roberts, Shal Marshall, Blaxx and Machel Montano, and noted the volume of his writing activity across a single researched season, between songs written, co-written, sung and sung with others. Ebuzztt adds the story of the door opening: Patrice Roberts gave him the opportunity he needed, they released “A Little Wine” together, and he then wrote many anthems for her and for other artists, including Shal Marshall.

His recent credits confirm that writer signature down to the metadata. On the Summer Of Carnivals compilation published on Qobuz, his records “Carnival Jumbie”, “Like Never Before” and “B.O.T.S.” credit Shertz James as writer and DJ Avalanche as producer. On Shazam, the credits of “Dunce”, “New World Order” and “Real Souljahs” list Shertz James in the same way as lyric writer. In 2024, the record “Identity” by Pahjo, with G-Sinnz and Problem Child, is credited in writing to Patrick Joseph and Shertz James. Singer and writer can therefore be traced record by record, which is not true of every artist on this site, and this profile uses that to assert nothing without a credit.

That double role also sheds light on his public talk. In the interview given to Ebuzztt after his 2025 double win, he advises new artists to learn how to learn, to keep ego at a distance and to choose carefully whom to take advice from. The point may sound general; it carries another weight coming from a man who earns his living in other people studios as much as on his own stages, and who has just taken the first two places of a national Road March in the same year.

There remains the question of style. The biographies describe his music as a fusion of Caribbean and American influences, born of a Vincentian childhood and a Brooklyn upbringing: soca at the centre, dancehall and hip hop in the reflexes. That background is what makes his step onto a bouyon riddim credible to DJ ears: the voice already knows how to carry fast parties, and bouyon, a cousin branch of soca through bouyon soca, does not ask him for another language, only another tempo of the same party.

What this profile knows, and what it does not

This profile knows the essentials, and owes them to checkable sources: an artist born in Saint Vincent, raised in Brooklyn, nicknamed Vincy Bad Boy, Vincy Road March champion in 2007 with “Party Animal”, in 2009 with “Mad House”, in 2017 with “Never Bow”, then in 2024, 2025 and 2026 with “Carnival Jumbie”, “Fraid Horn” and “Party Time”, a writer for Patrice Roberts, Shal Marshall, Blaxx and Machel Montano, and the partner of Ridge on the bouyon record “FYM” in 2025, a finalist for Collaboration of the Year at the Dominica Music Awards.

This profile also knows its grey zones, and names them. Published sources give two forms for his civil name, Johnny Fontainne in the older biographies and Shertz James in recent press and writing credits, and no source consulted formally explains the move from one to the other: this profile therefore prints both, attributed, and canonises neither. No official account of the artist was verified by directly opening a page during this research, so the structured data of this page links to no social profile: the sameAs field stays empty rather than risk a false link.

Finally, his exact place on a site devoted to bouyon needs stating. Problem Child is not a bouyon artist in the sense this site uses for artists from Dominica or the French Antilles: he is a top level soca artist whose one documented record, collaboration and Dominican nomination tie him directly to the current history of the genre. Honest profiles distinguish such cases instead of inflating discographies, and that is the rule of this site for every passing artist.

To listen, start with the record that justifies this page, “FYM” with Ridge, then work back to the road records that made his name, “Party Animal”, “Mad House” and “Fraid Horn”. Between the two, you will hear what the carnival Caribbean has become: one road, several islands, and champions crossing from one scene to another. Our bouyon playlist follows those crossings season after season.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Problem Child of FYM with Ridge the same as the soca artist from Saint Vincent?

Yes, according to the whole set of sources consulted. Mixes devoted to Saint Vincent, such as Vincy Heat 2025, list FYM in the same run as his Vincy Mas 2025 records, Fraid Horn, Pong Pong and Happy Carnival. No source describes a second, bouyon or Dominican, Problem Child. The record place at the Dominica Music Awards is explained by his Dominican partner, Mr Ridge.

What is Problem Child real name?

Published sources give two forms, and this profile prints both. The older biographies, on NTS and Buzz.tt, publish the birth name Johnny Fontainne, with the nickname Vincy Bad Boy. Recent press, Ebuzztt in 2025, gives the real name as Shertz James, and the writing credits of his recent records on Shazam and Qobuz list Shertz James as writer.

How many times has Problem Child won the Vincy Road March?

The sources document six: in 2007 with Party Animal, in 2009 with Mad House, in 2017 with Never Bow, in 2024 with Carnival Jumbie, in 2025 with Fraid Horn, first with 100 points ahead of his own Pong Pong, and in 2026 with Party Time, his third straight win according to the official results reported by Vincypowa News.

Has Problem Child written songs for other artists?

Yes. The Vincentian newspaper Searchlight counted him in 2020 among the most prolific songwriters in Saint Vincent and credits him with writing for Patrice Roberts, Shal Marshall, Blaxx and Machel Montano. Ebuzztt tells how Patrice Roberts gave him a decisive opportunity with their record A Little Wine, before he wrote many anthems for her and for others.

Is FYM a bouyon record or a soca record?

FYM is published as a Ridge and Problem Child record, released on 30 January 2025, and it circulates in soca and bouyon mixes. On this site it is classed as his documented bouyon collaboration, alongside Dominican singer Mr Ridge, because that link earned it a finalist place for Collaboration of the Year at the Dominica Music Awards 2025. The rest of his known discography remains soca.

Where should I hear Problem Child after FYM?

Hear his road records first: Party Animal, Mad House, Never Bow, Carnival Jumbie, Fraid Horn and Pong Pong, then his duet with Ridge. Our bouyon playlist follows the collaborations between Dominica and its neighbouring islands, including the one that brought Problem Child to this site.
