Remix bouyon: the hit-converting machine

The bouyon remix takes a track everyone knows, an Afro, pop, rap or R&B hit, and replays it with the codes of bouyon: raised tempo, keyboard loop, Dominican percussion and carnival energy.

The method

The remixer keeps the voice and the emotion of the original, but rebuilds the whole ground underneath: the rhythmic grid comes from jing ping and lapo kabwit, the bass becomes synthetic and fast, the build-ups imitate a carnival band. The audience arrives for the song, it discovers a genre.

Smokiller, the in-house reference

It is the specialty of Smokiller, the Bouyon Shattaz remix project: its bouyon versions of Afro and pop tracks draw a new audience toward bouyon, then toward the original artists of Dominica. A deliberate gateway strategy to grow the genre.
