Jounen Kweyol: Creole Day in songs
Published October 21, 2026
Jounen Kweyol means Creole Day, the Creole day in Kweyol. In Saint Lucia as in Dominica, the day is sung in Kweyol, and labels devote whole riddims to it. The proof fits in one playlist: Creole Day Songs, built by Smokiller, lines up around a hundred tracks from Saint Lucia and Dominica, and it is embedded at the bottom of this page.
Whole riddims for Creole Day
The playlist shows a well-oiled production circuit in Saint Lucia: for Creole Day, labels release a riddim and several artists voice it. At Jammin' Records, the Nai Port Riddim carries Creole Day by Mighty in 2013, then the Ca Ca le Riddim lines up Fini Wom by Subance and Fouye by Mighty, also known as Grandpa Apa, in 2014. At Fox Productions, the Qwadrill Riddim brings together Suh Tay Kweyol by Mallad and Pitchay by Blackboy the same year, billed as Creole Day tracks, Jounen Kweyol St Lucie.
The system is the same as bouyon's: one riddim, several voices, a release timed to the Creole date. The difference is the material: where bouyon aims at carnival and the road, the Creole Day songs celebrate the Kweyol language and culture themselves.
The folk stock: medleys and older voices
Alongside the riddims, the selection keeps the Creole folk stock: a Saint Lucia Creole medley by the St Lucia National Youth Choir, St. Lucians Unite, I Love This Land Where I Was Born, and Mamai la dit whai by Sesenne Descarte, as the title is printed in the list. Dominica closes the selection with Anita by Midnight Groovers, track number 100 of the playlist.
That mix is the signature of Creole Day in music: the folk tradition and the recent productions answer each other in the same language.
Kweyol, the shared language of bouyon and Creole Day
Dominican Kweyol is close to the Creoles of Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe and Martinique: it is the linguistic passport that let bouyon cross the sea, as this site's Bouyon and Kweyol page tells it. Bouyon is sung first in Kweyol, and the Creole Day songs draw on the same stock of language, village fairs and social commentary.
Smokiller's Creole Day Songs playlist, embedded below, gathers that repertoire: 100 tracks enumerated in our survey, from Saint Lucia and Dominica. For the other selections this site tracks, open the bouyon playlist page, and find the Lucian side on the Bouyon in Saint Lucia page.
