Dancehall bouyon: the dancehall thread running through bouyon

Published October 21, 2026

Dancehall is not a guest in bouyon, it is one of its original ingredients. From dancehall voices riding bouyon riddims in the 1990s to today's Martinican shatta, the Jamaican thread runs through the whole Dominican sound. The most recent proof comes from Smokiller himself: his YouTube playlist Shatta Bouyon Mix 2026 bills itself in its own description as the ultimate Caribbean dancehall playlist, and it is embedded at the bottom of this page.

Bouyon-muffin: dancehall voices over bouyon riddims

The first documented bridge between dancehall and bouyon is called bouyon-muffin. In the 1990s, voices from raggamuffin and dancehall were laid over Dominica's bouyon riddims. The founding figure of that crossover is Skinny Banton, who worked with WCK from 1995 and made bouyon-muffin a branch of the Dominican sound in its own right.

The formula is simple and durable: the riddim stays bouyon, fast and percussive, while the vocal borrows dancehall's attacks, its chanted hooks and its sound system energy. That formula opened bouyon to voices from across the Caribbean long before the streaming platforms.

Wrecketeng: remixing bouyon, hip hop and dancehall

The second step of the dancehall thread is a studio practice: Wrecketeng. DJ Cut, who founded the practice with Bucktown Sounds and the Bushtown Clan, built tracks by sampling and reassembling bouyon, hip hop and dancehall. The official spelling, Wrecketeng, comes from DJ Cut himself, the founder; the reketeng spelling circulating online is a widespread error.

In the early 2000s the Nursery Krew took the practice up in Roseau, with a young Smokiller in its ranks. Tracks like Peanuts and Sorti Desandre show the method: familiar loops, dancehall and rap voices, and the bouyon pulse underneath. In December 2025 Smokiller revived Wrecketeng on an album with DJ Cut, Klass Money and Charlie Black, framing those techniques as the ancestors of bouyon's newer labels.

Shatta: Martinique's dancehall meets bouyon

The third bridge is Martinican. Shatta, whose name comes from the Jamaican word shotta, is a dancehall subgenre born in Martinique, built on a tempo close to 100 BPM, far slower than the bouyon pulse. Its breakthrough track is Tic by Maureen, released in 2020 and carried by a TikTok wave in 2021, followed by Laptop by Kalash and Maureen in 2022.

The crossover with bouyon is documented as early as January 17, 2020 with Shatta by DJ Chinwax, a fusion of shatta and modern bouyon. Since then the two scenes share the same stages, the same riddims and the same Creole audience, and this site's Shatta bouyon page follows the pairing closely. The playlist embedded below, built by Smokiller, programmes both sounds in the same mix.

Today: the playlist that says dancehall

Smokiller's Shatta Bouyon Mix 2026, published on his YouTube channel, lines up around a hundred videos: it features FIX UP (Ya Ya Ya) by G'z Up, Joli BB by Reo and Maurane Voyer, the Up Next Bouyon cypher and tracks by Asa Bantan. Its description presents it as a Caribbean dancehall playlist and names Maureen, TKS 2G, Mikado and Blaiz Fayah, names from the shatta and dancehall scenes of the French Antilles.

The same selection exists on Spotify under the name Bouyon Music 2026 | Road Mix: it is the playlist Bouyon Shattaz sends to listeners who comment ROAD MIX. Both players are embedded below.
