Shazdown Mmw: three Guadeloupe bouyon riddims on Road Fever
Published October 20, 2026
Shazdown Mmw is the best supplied producer name on the Guadeloupe side of “Road Fever”, the carnival riddims compilation released by the London label Soundway Records on May 9, 2025. Where most producers on the record sign one or two tracks, he signs three: “Bouyon Beam Riddim”, dated 2015 and placed third on the vinyl, then two digital only pieces, “Bouyon Truth Riddim”, dated 2023, and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, dated 2022. The official label notes say he is based in Guadeloupe, alongside DJ Demafidem, and his two digital tracks received from Resident Advisor the most precise critical description of any bouyon piece on the record. For the rest, the file is thin and this profile says so plainly: no confirmed legal name, no biography, no standalone artist page found, and a suffix, Mmw, whose meaning no opened source explains.
Three tracks, a Guadeloupe base, no legal name: the inventory
The verified Shazdown Mmw inventory holds four pieces, and they must be laid out before any story. First piece: a name in two forms, Shazdown Mmw on the vinyl listing and in the label notes, Shazdown alone in the digital listing of the same record and in the Resident Advisor review. Second piece: three tracks, all instrumental riddims, all released by Soundway Records on “Road Fever”. Third piece: a base, Guadeloupe, stated by the official label notes in a sentence that pairs Shazdown Mmw with DJ Demafidem. Fourth piece: a composition credit, because the Shazam page for “Bouyon Truth Riddim” names a composer and drum programmer, Abel Fontange, under the performer name Shazdown Mmw. Everything else in this profile is the documented context of those four pieces.
The credit point requires particular discipline, and this profile applies it to the letter. Shazam credits “Bouyon Truth Riddim” as follows: Shazdown Mmw as performer, Abel Fontange on drum programming and as composer, Frank Merritt as mastering engineer. No source opened during this research says that Abel Fontange is the person behind the Shazdown Mmw name, nor that he is merely a collaborator, nor what exact link joins the two names. This profile therefore reports the credit for what it is, a track credit, and refuses to turn it into an identity. The day a primary source links the two names, that sentence will be written; until then, it is not.
What the research did not find must be written with the same clarity as what it found. No standalone Shazdown Mmw artist page was found during this research on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Qobuz, SoundCloud, Audiomack, YouTube or Discogs, beyond the pages of the compilation itself and the Shazam track page already cited. No interview, no biography, no precise Guadeloupe town, no verified photograph, no explanation of the Mmw suffix were confirmed. The name therefore travels exactly the way these riddims travelled before the record: through track listings, credits and mixes, far more than through faces.
That configuration makes Shazdown Mmw a different case from ScarnX, the Dominican producer on the same record, whose profile on this site holds only one verified track. Shazdown Mmw holds three, spread over eight years of production dates, and two of them were listened to and described by an international critic. The file stays thin as biography, but as discography it is the thickest of the three names the label explicitly attaches to bouyon on this record. That relative thickness, three dated riddims and one composition credit, is what justifies a full page, on condition that it is never filled with what the sources do not give.
“Bouyon Beam Riddim”: the 2015 piece that opens the Guadeloupe side
“Bouyon Beam Riddim” is the centrepiece of the file, because it is the only one of the three that made the vinyl. It holds the third position on Side A, between “Smash Or Pass Riddim” by Viral Riddims and “On Di Road Riddim” by DJ Demafidem, and it runs 3 minutes 20, which makes it one of the longest tracks in the vinyl programme. The digital listing of the record dates it to 2015. Ten years therefore separate its making from its release by Soundway: like the other riddims on the record, it was not composed for the compilation, it lived before it in the circuit of vocals, mixes and sound systems the format is made for, and then the work of compiler Rozaly fixed it on vinyl.
The title itself is a document. Beam, a shaft of light, joined to the word bouyon and then to the word Riddim: the title grammar of this record mixes an image name, often in English and built to be shouted by a DJ, with the filing word of the genre. Shazdown Mmw pushes that grammar further on his other two tracks, “Bouyon Truth” and “Bouyon 3004”, but it is “Bouyon Beam” that was kept for the vinyl, and therefore for the object that collectors, record shops and critics hold in their hands. In the economy of a compilation, choosing fourteen vinyl tracks out of the twenty five in the digital listing is a judgment by the compiler, and Shazdown Mmw passes it with his oldest piece.
The Bandcamp Daily review, which made “Road Fever” its album of the day on May 12, 2025, cites precisely this piece, and cites it together with its side neighbour. The review writes that tracks like “On Di Road” and “Bouyon Beam”, with their punchy intros featuring synth stabs and vocal samples, show the talent of these producers for reimagining traditional music, laptop production replacing pianos, saxophones and big brass sections with futuristic sonic collages. That is, to this day, the most direct critical description of “Bouyon Beam Riddim”: a hard entry, stabbing synths, sampled voices, and a claimed line between carnival tradition and digital production.
The place of the piece in the programme also matters to the ear. Side A opens with two Lucian tracks, “Soca Panda Riddim” by Ransum Records and “Smash Or Pass Riddim” by Viral Riddims, then “Bouyon Beam Riddim” tips the record toward its Guadeloupe side, immediately followed by “On Di Road Riddim”. The two producers the label notes call Guadeloupe based therefore follow each other in the middle of Side A, at positions three and four, as a block. To hear the shared grammar of these instrumentals, our bouyon riddim page explains how a riddim is born, travels and changes voices, and our bouyon Guadeloupe page retraces the Guadeloupe branch of the genre.
“Bouyon Truth Riddim” and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”: the two digital pieces
The other two Shazdown Mmw tracks exist only in the digital version of “Road Fever”, at positions twenty and twenty one of the twenty five track listing. “Bouyon Truth Riddim”, dated 2023, runs 3 minutes 43: it is the longest piece in the whole digital programme. “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, dated 2022, runs 2 minutes 21. Their digital only status does not make them secondary: it is on them, and not on “Bouyon Beam”, that the international press lingered longest, and it is “Bouyon Truth” that carries the most complete platform record of the three, with tempo and detailed credits.
That record is the Shazam page, opened during this research. It presents “Bouyon Truth Riddim” as released on May 9, 2025 by Soundway Records Ltd, as part of a digital set named “Road Fever EP1”, and it gives a tempo of 159 beats per minute, above the minimal 150 threshold the label notes claim for the whole record. It also recalls, through the credits already cited, that behind the performer name Shazdown Mmw, the composition and drum programming of this piece are attributed to Abel Fontange, and the mastering to Frank Merritt. Those are the only individual credit lines in the whole file, and this profile gives them as credits, without converting them into biography.
The Resident Advisor review, published on May 21, 2025, describes the two pieces with images that work as analysis. Of “Bouyon Truth Riddim”, it says that it pits ear needling synths against bleating horns to create an unsettling quality, the melody ricocheting between blasts of brass like a frantic pinball machine, with the feel of a labyrinthine underground dance floor whose groove is as disorienting as it is addictive. Of “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, it says that it goes deeper, with an erupting keyboard motif that roars like a semi truck racing down the highway. No other bouyon piece on the record received so concrete a reading from the international press, and that is a fact of the file: the producer least documented as a biography is, musically, one of the most described.
The three dates, 2015, 2022 and 2023, finally draw a minimal but real trajectory. They say that Shazdown Mmw was producing bouyon riddims as early as 2015, that he was still producing them in 2022 and 2023, and that the compiler chose to show that span rather than a single flash. They also say what the label repeats for the whole record: these instrumentals were first built to carry vocals, and no source consulted names the voiced versions of these three riddims, nor their performers. That blank is shared by almost the whole record, and this profile leaves it blank. Our bouyon playlist follows, for its part, the voiced and current side of the same genre.
Guadeloupe or Dominica: the disagreement to flag, not to settle in silence
The Shazdown Mmw file contains an open contradiction between two serious sources, and the rule of this site is to show it instead of hiding it. The official notes of Soundway Records, the label that releases the music and knows its producers, write that Dominica bouyon sound thrives through ScarnX, and that Shazdown Mmw and DJ Demafidem are Guadeloupe based. The Resident Advisor review, for its part, places Shazdown on the Dominica side when it comes to describe “Bouyon Truth Riddim” and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”. Both texts cannot be right together about the attachment of the artist, and this profile follows the label, for a simple method reason: a label note is a production document, a review phrase is an editorial shortcut written at a distance from the scene.
That disagreement is not a detail, because the whole geography of “Road Fever” rests on three islands. Dennery Segment comes from Saint Lucia, from the Dennery district that gives it its name. Bouyon comes from Dominica, born in Roseau in the late 1980s in the wake of WCK, and its best known voiced branch, bouyon soca, was started by Dada in 2003 in Dominica according to the first hand testimony of Sean “Smokiller” Francis, who was in the rooms where it began, then popularized by Triple Kay. Guadeloupe, for its part, developed its own practice of bouyon, fed by the constant back and forth between the two neighbouring islands. To call Shazdown Mmw Guadeloupe based, as the label does, is therefore to place him in that Guadeloupe branch of the genre, and not on the mother island. Our bouyon soca page retraces the Dominican voiced branch of this history.
The Patta presentation, the compiler partner, confirms the map of the label without naming the island of each act: the compilation, Patta writes, zeroes in on Dennery Segment from Saint Lucia and bouyon from Dominica and Guadeloupe, with a tempo that rarely dips below 150 beats per minute, FL Studio percussion packs, chopped DJ samples, distorted vox clips and synth riffs that could cut steel. On that two branch bouyon map, the Guadeloupe branch rests on two names only, Shazdown Mmw and DJ Demafidem, and Shazdown Mmw carries three fifths of its tracks if you count the whole record. His attachment is therefore not a footnote: it decides how the Guadeloupe presence is told on the most visible record of the genre in 2025.
One more point, for completeness, about what the disagreement does not say. No source gives the Guadeloupe town where Shazdown Mmw works, nor whether he was born there, nor since when he is based there. Based in Guadeloupe is the only verified wording, and this profile holds to it: it turns neither a work base into a birth, nor a label sentence into an address. It is the same discipline that governs the ScarnX profile on this site, where only the label sentence attaches the producer to Dominica. In a scene where producers travel between Pointe a Pitre, Roseau and Castries, caution about islands is not timidity, it is accuracy.
The limits of the file, and what three riddims are enough to establish
Sum up the limits without softening them. Nothing is known of Shazdown Mmw beyond the credits: not the confirmed legal name, not the age, not the town, not the studio, not the singers who voiced his riddims, not the meaning of the Mmw suffix, not even whether the name covers one person or a team. The Shazam credit naming Abel Fontange as composer and drum programmer of “Bouyon Truth Riddim” is a track credit, not an identity key, and this profile refuses to present it otherwise. No track is known outside the three “Road Fever” pieces, no standalone artist page, no concert date, no interview. The verified discography fits on three lines, and the structured data of this page reflects exactly that: three recordings, and one official link, the Soundway compilation page, opened and verified during this research.
What those three lines are nevertheless enough to establish is not nothing. They establish a presence over time, from 2015 to 2023, in the bouyon genre, from Guadeloupe according to the label. They establish a selection by a researcher compiler, Rozaly, for a London label that pressed the record on vinyl in France, with mastering and cut by The Carvery, design by Wolfe Hall Studio and photography by Selwyn De Wind. They establish a real critical reception: album of the day at Bandcamp Daily, a precise description at Resident Advisor, a place in the Patta presentation among the production crews of the record. For a producer with no artist page found, that is a bundle of international traces that many riddim producers, whose work carries whole carnivals, never received.
This profile will therefore be updated on the day the material exists: an official artist page, a fourth track, the names of the voiced versions of “Bouyon Beam Riddim”, “Bouyon Truth Riddim” or “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, or a primary document that links, or does not link, the name of Abel Fontange to that of Shazdown Mmw. Until then, the recommended listening follows the order of the record: “Bouyon Beam Riddim” at position three of the vinyl, followed by “On Di Road Riddim” by DJ Demafidem for the other side of the Guadeloupe block, then the two digital pieces, “Bouyon Truth Riddim” and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, in listing order, before comparing with “Midnight Fever Riddim” by ScarnX, the Dominican piece that closes the vinyl. And if a reader holds a mix, a flyer or a credit where Shazdown Mmw appears before 2025, that is exactly the kind of document that will grow this file.

The official label notes say he is based in Guadeloupe, alongside DJ Demafidem. No source consulted gives his confirmed legal name, his biography or his make up, one person or a team, and this profile does not invent them.
What are the verified Shazdown Mmw tracks?
Three, all on “Road Fever” and all verified on the official label page: “Bouyon Beam Riddim”, 3 minutes 20, dated 2015, third track of the vinyl; “Bouyon Truth Riddim”, 3 minutes 43, dated 2023, digital only; and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim”, 2 minutes 21, dated 2022, digital only. No other track was found during this research.
Is Abel Fontange Shazdown Mmw?
That is not established. The Shazam page for “Bouyon Truth Riddim” credits Shazdown Mmw as performer, Abel Fontange on drum programming and as composer, and Frank Merritt as mastering engineer. That is a track credit: no source opened during this research says Abel Fontange is the person behind the Shazdown Mmw name, and this profile does not claim it.
Is Shazdown Mmw from Guadeloupe or from Dominica?
Based in Guadeloupe, according to the official Soundway Records notes, which pair Shazdown Mmw and DJ Demafidem in the same sentence, while ScarnX carries the bouyon sound of Dominica on the same record. The Resident Advisor review places Shazdown on the Dominica side, which contradicts the label; this site follows the label, which releases the music, and flags the gap.
What does the press say about his two digital tracks?
Resident Advisor, on May 21, 2025, describes “Bouyon Truth Riddim” as a clash of ear needling synths and bleating horns, its melody ricocheting like a pinball machine, and “Bouyon 3004 Riddim” as carried by an erupting keyboard motif that roars like a semi truck on the highway. Shazam gives “Bouyon Truth Riddim” a tempo of 159 beats per minute.
Where can I hear Shazdown Mmw?
On “Road Fever”, through the Soundway Records Bandcamp page, on vinyl for “Bouyon Beam Riddim” and digitally for all three tracks. In the order of the record, hear “Bouyon Beam Riddim” after “Smash Or Pass Riddim” by Viral Riddims, then pieces twenty and twenty one of the digital listing. Our bouyon playlist covers the voiced side of the same genre.
